NZ weather summary October 1956
« on: May 01, 2018, 03:01:46 PM »
October 1956:  A warm month with less wind than usual. Conditions were very favourable for farming, except on the east coast of the North Island where it was too wet. Two small tornadoes caused local damage at Takapuna on the 1st, and Reefton on the 18th.

In eastern districts from East Cape to Castlepoint and in parts of North Canterbury rainfall was double the normal value. In the Hastings-Waipukurau area, where it was 3 times the normal, some places had their wettest October on record. Rainfall was also above normal over the remainder of Canterbury and in the greater part of the Auckland province. On the West Coast, and in Southland and south Otago it was a comparatively dry October, with totals only 2/3 of the usual value. On the 9th-10th heavy rain fell in central and southern Hawkes Bay and Wairarapa, with flooding in these districts and in the lower Manawatu River. A number of severe hailstorms were reported over a wide area of the North Island on the 22nd, with crop damage at Tokomaru bay and at Waiohau, near Kawerau.

Temperatures: Temperatures were above normal by about 2F. The last week of the month was particularly warm, with temperatures comparable with those usually experienced in summer.

Sunshine: Sunshine was below normal over the greater part of the country, and the deficit amounted to an hour a day in most eastern and northern districts. Invercargill and parts of Westland had somewhat more sunshine than usual.
