NZ weather summary June 1958
« on: May 06, 2018, 12:08:05 PM »
June 1958: In contrast to May, June was a sunny month with comparatively low rainfall. A spell of settled weather from the 9th to the 22nd was particularly appreciated. Conditions generally were very favourable for stock. Gales were reported in many districts on the 1st.

Rainfall:
Rainfall was mainly less than 1/2 of the average value over the greater part of the country. In Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, South Canterbury and North Otago, totals were mainly less than 1”, and between 10% and 25% of the normal value. For parts of the Gisborne-East Cape area it was the driest June on record. Totals were not far below average in Taranaki, western districts of Wellington province, about Christchurch, and in Southland and South Otago. The only areas which had appreciably more rain than usual were Fiordland and Stewart Island.

Temperatures: Temperatures were above normal in most districts. In Southland and inland areas of Otago and South Canterbury it was 2F-3F warmer than usual. Snow was reported to low levels on the 7th-8th over much of the South Island and the central plateau of the North Island.

Sunshine: The greater part of the country had more sunshine than usual. Highest departures of 30-60 hours were recorded about Cook Strait and also in eastern districts from Gisborne to Christchurch. It was the sunniest June on record for Masterton, Wellington and Blenheim. In the Auckland province and Taranaki and in western and southern districts of the South Island from Timaru southward sunshine was close to average. [For eastern areas from Marlborough to Gisborne this would still generally be the most pleasant June on record, quite unwinterlike].

[Some totals: Te Hapua 102, Kaitaia 114, Kerikeri 120, Whangarei 112, Auckland 132, Tauranga 146, Whakatane 173, Taupo 135, Hamilton 118, New Plymouth 123, Masterton 172, Gisborne 186, Napier 185, Paraparaumu 155, Ohakea 134, Palmerston Nth 118, Levin 126, Wellington 165, Wanganui 136, Westport 120,  Hokitika 98, Greymouth 81, Haast 127, Nelson 191, Blenheim 203(*), Grassmere 175, Mt Cook 74, Methven 151, Christchurch 148, Tekapo 101, Timaru 132, Waimate 115, Omarama 139, Dunedin 100, Queenstown 77, Alexandra 124, Invercargill 80, Campbell Is 9, Chatham Is 71].

[(*) The Blenheim total was about 80% of the recordable amount – there is only a handful of instances where sites with good “horizon” visibility have managed 80% or more.]

Another impressive instance of per centage of possible sunshine hours there.  The far north part of the country's totals look positively miserable by comparison.

Yes, the anticyclones were more centrally located and the far northern parts missed out. Interesting in particular that Te Hapua's anomalies often disagreed with much of the country.
