NZ weather summary August 1957
« on: May 04, 2018, 07:57:46 AM »
August 1957: The persistence of northeasterly winds for much of the month caused August to be drier than usual, except in Hawkes Bay and most of the Auckland province. Generally conditions were mild and pasture growth good, except in Otago and Southland where severe frosts early in the month were followed by dry conditions.

Rainfall:
Rainfall was less than half the normal value over most eastern districts of the South Island and also in Wairarapa and Manawatu. It was particularly dry in North and Central Otago, where many stations received less than 0.5”. By contrast, it was 2 to 3 times as wet as usual in the Thames valley, northern Northland and Gisborne. For Paeroa, with 14.40” of rain, it was the wettest of any month in over 40 years of record; and for Te Aroha, with 18.74”, it was the 2nd wettest month in nearly 70 years of record.

Temperatures: It was warmer than usual by about 2F over most of the country. However in Hawkes Bay and eastern districts from Timaru southward temperatures were about normal. [Severe frosts and screen minima down to -15.5C in Otago and Southland in the first 3 days, with upper reaches of some rivers frozen over].

Sunshine: Except in western and far southern parts of the South Island, sunshine was below normal. The deficiency ranged up to an hour a day in Hawkes Bay and over most of the Auckland province.

[Some totals: Te Hapua 131, Kaitaia 123, Kerikeri 123, Whangarei 110, Auckland 143, Tauranga 114, Whakatane 160, Taupo 124, Hamilton 120, New Plymouth 134, Masterton 112, Gisborne 119, Napier 131, Paraparaumu 150, Ohakea 136, Palmerston Nth 120, Levin 130, Wellington 138, Wanganui 141, Westport 159, Hokitika 159, Greymouth 158, Haast 135, Nelson 164, Blenheim 157, Grassmere 160, Mt Cook 105, Methven 152, Christchurch 139, Tekapo 153, Timaru 135, Waimate 121, Omarama 169, Dunedin 120, Queenstown 130, Alexandra 150, Invercargill 133, Campbell Is 27, Chatham Is 122].
